I Could Dance All Night II CD Review by Butch Halpin of the Carolina Sounds Beach Show - >

My buddy Bill Ballard has written some good tunes, most notably "Ocean Drive Sunday" recorded by John Franklin. Tharold Huffman is credited as the performer on Bill's latest creation, "Highway Number 9". This is a good bluesy, kickin' back, adult beverage drinkin' tune.

Also, there are plans the Army will be making a video of his song "Greatest of Heroes"
Thank you to the many people have written Bill in appreciation of his patriotic song.

To hear his song, Greatest of Heroes

 They are our soldiers
Names on the wall
In foreign lands
When towers fall.
The greatest of heroes
Lives on the line
They are friends and
Neighbors of mine.”

Bill Ballard flies charter jets all over the world. His passenger are millionaire NASCAR drivers, big-time rock stars and legends that make the headlines and dazzle the crowds. But his heart is grounded in traditional values like patriotism and down-home living.

Last year after a particularly rough week for American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, Ballard picked up his guitar and began to write a song from the heart. A veteran himself, Ballard just wanted to let the troops know they are loved, no matter where they are from or what kind of background they have.

Could be a farmboy
Might be a homeboy
Diggin’ on Hip-Hop or
Groovin’ to Southern Rock
A Latino Lady or
A Prom Night Baby”

“The lyrics just came into my head,” said Ballard, whose father-in-law was a “farmboy” wounded in Iwo Jima during World War II.

“I began to think of my Army days...the words and melody started to come to me like a videotape rolling.”

After he wrote the rough draft, his longtime friend Mike Keever joined him to help fine-tune the song, and then they put together a rough mix recording in Ballard’s basement studio.

Friends Larry Shouse and Andy Yarber joined in, helped tweak the song some more, and not long afterwards Keever sent the mix to a friend who was serving in a Marine unit in Falujah, Iraq. The soldiers received the song just prior to their 12-day assault on the city, and by the time the fighting had subsided, the emails began to come in to Denver.

“They were really moved by it,” said Ballard. The Department of Defense got word about the song, and it was added to a military website http://www.americasupportsyou.mil/ last month.

While “The Greatest of Heroes” may not get a lot of airtime from big radio stations, it does get airplay locally and in communities near military bases, and Ballard doesn’t hesitate to play it for anyone who will listen.

Two weeks ago, while in Talladega for the race, he played it for a three-star general.

“I thought he was gonna bust out crying,” said Ballard.

No matter what the future might hold for the song, Keever and Ballard just wanted to let the troops know they are appreciated and supported.

“They give so much, yet ask for so little, just simply our love and respect,” said Ballard
