"Gras" sword bayonet

This bayonet was the last of the French “sword-type” bayonets. It was
manufactured to fit the French Model 1874
“Gras” Infantry rifle,
basically a refinement of the Model 1866 Chassepot infantry rifle. The
“Gras” was manufactured from
1874 to about 1885. This bayonet has a
solid brass pommel with integral latching mechanism
(push-button/spring-steel).
Grips are wood. Crossguard is steel, usually
“blued” with upper guard being the muzzle-ring, lower guard forming a
hooked
“blade-breaker” quillon. Blades are steel –
well made – and triangular (3-edge) in form. Arsenal, month, and year of
manufacture
and will appear something like, “Mre d’Armes de
Chatellerault Juin 1882”. The scabbards are usually blued sheet-rolled
steel,
semi-oval, tubular, with a ball finial. Matching number 13470 on
scabbard and qullion - inspection marks - R twice
Spanish WWII bayonet - Toledo mark Mauser Bolo Model -blade 9 3/4", 14 1/2" overall, wood handle- $150
Manufactured for
the WWII era Spanish Mauser rifles. The hilt construction is steel, with
steel “bird’s head”
pommel, steel crossguard with muzzle-ring as the
upper quillon, lower quillon has a drum or ball finial; checkered
or
plain wood grips. The blade is “bolo” shaped, single-edged,
single-fullered (both sides). Scabbard is of “blued”
sheet-steel with
round (oval) ball frog stud; ball finial as a drag. The blades fit
somewhat sloppily in the scabbards.
Spanish CETME,
FR8, FR7- $20
Fits FR7,FR8 Spanish mausers and CETME rifle. They are approximately 13"
long, and are finished with a
black phosphate finish. The blade displays
the Spanish eagle and TOLEDO maker's markings.
Serial number ET55735A is
also stamped onto the blade, and the blade is a bolo type.*

16-17th Centuries
An all-steel stiletto like this one, particularly suited for thrusting, was often a gunner's last line of defense after the cannon and other arms available to the gun crew had been used. The triangular blades were often engraved with graduated markings and numbers. These divisions gave the gunner a means of measuring a gun bore and caliber of the ball, the ability to calculate distances, among other tasks.
